Unveiling Japan's Hidden Beauty: A Photographic Journey
Over the years, my love for Japan's captivating landscape has grown exponentially. Initially hesitant to venture beyond the concrete jungle that most associate with Japan, I discovered a whole new world waiting to be explored. I believe many travelers and expatriates share this sentiment when embarking on adventures abroad or relocating to a different country. Having spent a decade intermittently living in Japan, I must confess that my adjustment to this new environment was smoother due to my Japanese spouse. However, my passion for photography and nature compelled me to seek connections within the photography community and rely on technology to unlock the doors to Japan's diverse landscapes.
Embracing a Personal Photographic Style:
While capturing snapshots of iconic landmarks can serve as valuable learning experiences, I found myself longing for a deeper sense of fulfillment. Each time I left those familiar locations, I felt as though something was missing. It was during this realization that I started to shape my own style and genre of photography. By immersing myself in the works of renowned photographers through social media and their websites, I discovered the photographers whose artistry and style truly inspired me. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this exploration was guiding me further afield, igniting the motivation to venture into the untamed backcountry of Japan, unaccompanied yet invigorated.
Unveiling Japan's Hidden Gems:
When scrolling through photos of Japan, one is likely to encounter a predictable recipe: temples, Tokyo, Mount Fuji, and cherry blossoms. However, allow me to reveal a secret—there is an entire world of untapped beauty waiting to be discovered. My journey led me to unveil a newfound appreciation for Japan's diverse landscapes, including its 440 volcanoes, 517 named waterfalls, 100 lakes, and 25 major mountain ranges that span the country. Simply place your finger on a map of Japan, and you will find intriguing locations worth exploring. My approach involved researching areas without delving too deeply, allowing myself to be guided by curiosity as I embarked on thrilling expeditions into the backcountry. The joy and excitement of discovering new and unexplored locations, unburdened by preconceived expectations, not only helped me understand the diverse cultures within Japan but also contributed to my growth as a photographer—a win-win situation.
Embracing the Call of Nature:
For me, the opportunity to immerse myself in nature and explore its wonders is always a welcome experience. While snapshots of Japan's iconic sights may satisfy some, they left me yearning for something more profound. There is nothing inherently wrong with capturing such images; however, my desire was to create meaningful moments that would offer a unique perspective on Japan—a perspective that could be seen and felt through my photographs. In doing so, a whole new world will reveal itself, waiting to be explored and immortalized through the lens of your camera.
